Inspiration

Sixteen hummingbirds, scattered across the front.

Not a logo on a chest — a spread. The birds drift across the shirt the way they'd cross a garden, each one drawn from life and named beneath it.

Among them, the ones you can reasonably hope to see. Anna's is the only North American hummingbird that winters along the Pacific coast, and the male climbs a hundred feet before diving, the explosive chirp at the bottom made by air through his tail feathers rather than his voice. The Rufous makes the longest migration of any bird relative to its size — Alaska to Mexico and back on three grams of bird — and bullies everything at the feeder along the way. The Calliope is the smallest bird on the continent, about the weight of a penny, and still crosses five thousand miles a year. The Broad-tailed announces itself before you see it, its wings trilling like a cricket, and on freezing Rocky Mountain nights it drops into torpor and lets its body go cold until morning. Alongside them the Black-chinned, plain until the light catches the violet at its throat; the Costa's, whose amethyst gorget flares past his face; the metallic Broad-billed with its coral-red bill; and Rivoli's, called the Magnificent Hummingbird until 2017.

And the ones you have to go looking for, most of them Mexican birds that reach the United States only in the sky-island canyons of southeast Arizona and West Texas. The Blue-throated Mountain-gem, largest in the country. The Berylline, which has nested in Arizona only a handful of times. The Violet-crowned, White-eared, Plain-capped Starthroat and Lucifer Sheartail. Allen's, holding a narrow strip of coastal California, so close to a Rufous that telling them apart can come down to one tail feather. And the Ruby-throated — not scarce at all, but the only hummingbird breeding across the entire eastern half of the continent, which makes it the one a westerner has to travel for.

Printed on the Stanley/Stella Creator 2.0: 180 GSM midweight single jersey, 100% certified organic combed ring-spun cotton, elastane-free.
