And the ones you have to travel for, most of them Mexican birds that reach the United States only in the sky-island canyons of southeast Arizona and West Texas: the Blue-throated Mountain-gem, largest in the country; the Berylline, which has nested in Arizona only a handful of times; the Violet-crowned, White-eared, Plain-capped Starthroat and Lucifer Sheartail; Allen's, on its narrow strip of coastal California; and the Ruby-throated, not scarce at all but the only hummingbird breeding east of the Great Plains.
