This one isn't a graphic on a chest. The birds are scattered over the body, down both sleeves and around the pocket — the hoodie treated as a canvas rather than a billboard. From across a room it reads as pattern. Up close, every bird is drawn from life and named beneath it.
Among them the familiar: Anna's, the only one that winters on the Pacific coast, whose dive-chirp is made by air through his tail feathers rather than his voice; the Rufous, which crosses from Alaska to Mexico and back on three grams of bird; the Calliope, smallest bird on the continent at about the weight of a penny; the Broad-tailed, whose wings trill like a cricket and who drops into torpor on freezing mountain nights; plus the Black-chinned, Costa's, Broad-billed and Rivoli's.
And the ones you have to travel for, most of them Mexican birds that reach the United States only in the sky-island canyons of southeast Arizona and West Texas: the Blue-throated Mountain-gem, largest in the country; the Berylline, which has nested in Arizona only a handful of times; the Violet-crowned, White-eared, Plain-capped Starthroat and Lucifer Sheartail; Allen's, on its narrow strip of coastal California; and the Ruby-throated, not scarce at all but the only hummingbird breeding east of the Great Plains.
Printed on the Stanley/Stella Chaser Vintage: 330 GSM brushed fleece, 80% certified organic combed ring-spun cotton with 20% recycled polyester, garment dyed. Relaxed fit with dropped shoulders, a double-layered hood, 1×1 ribbed cuffs and hem, a double-stitched kangaroo pocket, herringbone neck tape and deliberately faded seams.
Garment dyed, which means every piece is slightly different. The colour is dyed into the finished garment rather than the yarn, so the shade varies a little from one to the next and the faded effect deepens with age. Colour may transfer onto light-coloured fabrics by rubbing, particularly when new.
