Eight macaws, and the arc between them runs from genuine recovery to almost certainly gone.
Spix's Macaw disappeared from the wild around the turn of the century — every surviving bird in captivity, the species existing nowhere in the sky — until birds bred in Germany were released back into the Brazilian caatinga in 2022. The Glaucous Macaw may already be past saving: there has been no confirmed sighting since the 1960s, and the yatay palm groves it fed in were cleared for farmland generations ago. Lear's Macaw is the counter-argument — down to roughly sixty birds in the late 1980s, now well past a thousand, still tied to the licuri palms of Bahia. The Blue-throated Macaw holds on in the palm islands of the Bolivian Beni, fewer than five hundred left. The Red-fronted Macaw is a desert parrot, endemic to a narrow band of arid thorn valley in Bolivia and found nowhere else on earth. The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest flying parrot alive, over three feet from beak to tail, with a bill that opens palm nuts a person would need a hammer for. The Military Macaw is scattered thinly from Mexico to Argentina and common nowhere across the whole of it. And the Blue-headed Macaw is among the smallest, a foothill bird of Peru and western Brazil that few people ever manage to see.
