The Northern Cardinal is the state bird, and unusually among songbirds the female sings too, often answering from the nest. The Sandhill Crane had vanished from Ohio entirely by the early twentieth century and has since walked back into the state's marshes on its own. The Pileated Woodpecker is crow-sized and chisels rectangular holes deep enough to bring a dead tree down. The Baltimore Oriole weaves a hanging pouch of a nest sturdy enough to survive the winter after the birds have gone. The Indigo Bunting migrates at night and steers by the stars, having memorised the sky's rotation as a nestling. The Blackburnian Warbler burns orange at the throat and stays so high in the canopy you will strain your neck to find it. The Eastern Bluebird nearly disappeared and came back on the strength of volunteer nest-box trails run by ordinary people. The Eastern Wood-Pewee sings its own name from the mid-canopy all summer long. And the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds east of the Great Plains, some crossing five hundred miles of open Gulf in a single flight.
