Twelve birds of California, from the Oregon line to the Mexican border — mountain, marsh and open coast.
The California Condor was down to twenty-two individuals in 1982 and numbers more than five hundred today, over half of them flying wild again. The Yellow-billed Magpie lives nowhere else on earth — a bird found only in this state's oak valleys. The Great Egret was nearly shot out of existence for the plume trade, and the fight to save it built the Audubon movement, which still carries the bird as its emblem. The Brown Pelican made the same journey a century later: gone from the coast under DDT, back now, plunge-diving from forty feet. The Northern Spotted Owl holds the old growth of the northwest and is losing ground to logging and to Barred Owls pushing in from the east. Ridgway's Rail is endangered and nearly invisible, a secretive bird of tidal salt marsh heard far more often than seen. The Snowy Plover nests in a bare scrape on open sand, which is precisely why it is threatened. The Mountain Quail wears the longest head plume of any American quail and walks uphill in spring rather than flying. The California Quail — the state bird — carries a topknot that looks like one feather and is actually six. Anna's Hummingbird alone winters here, the male's dive-chirp produced by air through his tail feathers rather than his voice. The American Avocet sweeps its upturned bill sideways through shallow water. And the Western Bluebird will take almost any cavity it finds, which is why nest boxes work so well for it.
