Nine birds of Arizona — saguaro desert, sky-island canyon, and the red cliffs of the Colorado Plateau.
The Elf Owl is the smallest owl in the world, about the weight of a golf ball, and it nests in old woodpecker holes cut into saguaro. Those holes are the work of the Gila Woodpecker, which excavates cavities that half the desert eventually moves into. Harris's Hawk is the raptor that hunts in packs — family groups flushing prey for one another, a behaviour found almost nowhere else among birds of prey. The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal alive, stooping at better than two hundred miles an hour. The California Condor flies here again after reintroduction at the Vermilion Cliffs, and now nests wild near the Grand Canyon. The Greater Roadrunner runs at twenty miles an hour and kills rattlesnakes. The Mexican Spotted Owl is federally threatened and holds the deep shaded canyons. The Southwestern Willow Flycatcher is endangered, tied to streamside willow thickets that have mostly been drained away. And the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, threatened in the West for the same reason, slips into riparian cottonwood just long enough to nest.
